Comparing In The Shadow of the Sun to Detroit Become Human
In The Shadow of the Sun tackles very different settings, most of which is that it has a very dark and gloomy atmosphere that makes you tired at every corner cause of the nonstop running, when I think of a dark and gloomy setting I think of mud that when you step in it it gets harder and harder to move and run. That goes the same for Detroit Become Human, both having dark and wet settings that makes the player feel like they are in a constant depression, there is sun at times but not enough that it doesn't rid of the stench that they are stuck in. In one mission of DBH, Marcus which is a main protagonist in the game is scrapped and sent into a landfill where many other androids are scrapped at and dead, some still functioning but barely. The first thing you see is rain falling down onto the muddy floor, covering his face, this was just right after his owner died of a heart attack due to a conflict between his son. The pain can be seen on his face and the emotional factor increases tenfold cause of the atmosphere which is wet and depressing. In one chapter in the book, Mia and Simon are running away from the KPA on muddy grounds which limit their movement, Mia cannot keep up with her brother and falls behind, eventually dropping to the floor exhausted, Simon doesn't go back since he hadn't realize it, she's tired of being weak in front of him, tiring of being the child to him, she forces herself back up full of determination using the last of her strength to catch up. Although the emotional factor cannot be played as well as in a graphically beautiful game as DBH, you can imagine it which is what books make you do, imagine the setting and landscape and what the characters situation is.
In the ending of DBH, the game's final protest between the Cyberlife Androids and the police enforcement of Detroit begin in again during a rainy atmosphere, which sets the mood and feeling between the both of them. Androids fighting for their freedom in a world where they are hated and looked down upon as slaves and the police pushing them back to put them back in their place as playthings to clean up their street trash. Marcus being the main leader of this Android society with Connor, an Detroit PD licensed android breaking out of his mind and becoming a deviant himself helps with the battle for Android freedom. In the book, there is another part where the setting matters in which they are trapped and holed up in a abandoned farm shack area with little to no food, Simon injuring his leg from running from the military. The roof having a hole in it and pouring down rain onto it, I can almost imagine the little drops and sounds the wood would make as it fell down, making it seem little hopeless but helping them drown out the sounds of what is happening to them. Makes you feel deep and connected with the characters situation at hand and how your reading it.
